Wisconsin`s Rural Communities Team Up To Attract Housing Developers


Rural Areas Struggle To Provide Housing For Workers, Elderly, Disabled

Some communities in rural Wisconsin are joining forces to try to meet the need for affordable housing. They`re looking to band together to drum up enough business to draw in developers.

Dave Armstrong, executive director with the Barron County Economic Development Corp., said the county sees about half its youth move away when they graduate from area high schools. As a result, Armstrong said the county, like other areas of the state, is experiencing a shortage of workers. Ken Notes: It is time to revisit an industry that we sort of set aside, manufactured housing offers some modular excellence. We should look at new zoning codes that mandate green factors, quality siding and roofing, accessibility, and overall quality -- rather than size, foundation and being stick built in place... Also mobile and manufactured are two different things with some new grey areas that have to be addressed code wise (specifically size and foundation).
