Developer Ditches $11M Madison Housing Project for Homeless


A developer is abandoning an $11 million project to provide permanent housing for Madison`s homeless.

Wisconsin State Journal reports that nonprofit Heartland Housing of Chicago announced Saturday that it`s dropping the 58 new units proposed for homeless adults and families on the city`s south side.

Heartland was facing a looming deadline to use federal tax credits for the development.

The city says it`s holding off on pursuing Housing First projects to re-examine how to best provide the units. The projects focus on housing the chronically homeless and offering mental health, substance abuse and other services...

Ken Notes: One more time, we really need to rethink how we address this issue across the board. Smaller affordable units, co-housing options, using tax dollars to acquire land for affordable homes in ALL neighborhoods, work with schools to create better school to work programs, create housing for restaurant and retail workers - hardworking people with good jobs who can not afford to live here, create real transit options for the region, visit models that work elsewhere, make this a nonpartisan nonpolitical issue.
