Wisconsin economic development agency audit: Improvements were made


A new audit shows the performance of Wisconsin’s economic development agency is improving but still lacking.

The Legislative Audit Bureau released its biennial review of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation on Wednesday. The report says WEDC largely complied with state law in fiscal year 2019-20.

Auditors noted, however, that the agency didn’t always award tax credits for wages paid as required by law and sometimes waited more than a year to revoke tax credits for businesses that didn’t live up to their contracts...

Ken Notes: Seems much better, but local ED professionals are often responsible for reporting and audits and they are not employees of WEDC or the State. In fact many are underfunded or even eliminated in local budgets.

I will suggest once again a partnership between WEDC and local communities to fund ED professionals at the local level. There is a great model for this type of program in the UW-Extension System.
